How your GPS can be detrimental for your Batavia, IL auto insurance policy.
Perhaps you’ve had a pang of doubt in your GPS once you turn down a darkened street that’s miles away from the freeway, or you take a long way round instead of a known shortcut. Perhaps you’ve ignored these doubts as you eventually reach your destination. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that placing too much control in technology can lead to real trouble, really quickly!
Throughout 2015, there have been several instances of serious crashes and deaths as a result of drivers following the GPS navigation rather than their own instinct. The following incidents are a good reminder not to become complacent behind the wheel!
- In East Chicago, a woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured when GPS directions routed them over a partially demolished bridge. The bridge had been closed since 2009.
- Following the GPS navigation, an Ohio man entered active train tracks instead of the freeway onramp. His car got stuck on the tracks, but luckily he exited quickly before a train collided with it.
- An elderly woman and her husband were driving in Brazil when the GPS navigation routed them into an area known for violence rather than driving along the beach, as they had intended. Their car was shot at more than 20 times and the woman later died from a heart attack. The incident led to a shootout between police and gang members.
If do rely on your navigation system, regularly update the software as this often updates roads and landscapes. Remember that you, as the driver, are in control. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Pull over and double check a direction either by pulling out one of those nifty (and now, vintage) road maps, or pop into a gas station or shop.
